Recipients of IEEE NPSS Awards

The Medical Imaging Scientist Award is given by the Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Technical Committee (NMISTC) in even-numbered years at the IEEE Medical Imaging Conference to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of medical imaging science. In selecting the recipient of this award, primary consideration will be given to nominees who have made significant innovations in the field of medical imaging science. Other factors include a nominee's overall research contribution and his/her influence on medical imaging science through education.

The Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award is given by the Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Technical Committee in odd-numbered years at the IEEE Medical Imaging Conference to a young investigator in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to the field of medical imaging science. Nominees are judged according to their contributions to medical imaging science as demonstrated by the technical merit and creativity of their research. Priority will be given to nominees whose research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, especially if the nominee is first author.

• 1996 - Robert N. Beck, Medical Imaging Scientist Award "for fundamental contributions to the mathematical and physical theories underlying nuclear medicine, medical imaging, and imaging science and for contributions to the education and inspiration of generations of imaging scientists"
• 1997 - Paul Kinahan "for important contributions to 3D image reconstruction" / Martin P. Tornai "for important contributions to the design of miniature imaging probes for use in surgery", Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award (shared)
• 1998 - Leslie W. Rogers, Medical Imaging Scientist Award "for contributions to the fundamental and practical physics and engineering of novel detectors and systems for emission imaging; and for contributions of leadership and mentorship within the medical imaging community"
• 1999 - Freek Beekman, Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award "for contributions to instrumentation, modeling, simulation, reconstruction and analysis of SPECT"
• 2000 - Harrison H. Barrett, Medical Imaging Scientist Award "for substantial research accomplishments in the physics, mathematics, and engineering aspects of medical imaging science and a history of outstanding mentorship and leadership contributions"
• 2001 - Jinyi Qi, Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award "for contributions to the analysis of Bayesian image reconstruction algorithms, and for the development of high-resolution 3D Bayesian image reconstruction methods for animal PET scans"
• 2002 - Edward J Hoffman, Medical Imaging Scientist Award "for important and sustained contributions to the development of positron emission tomography and for dedication to graduate level education in the nuclear medical imaging sciences"
• 2003 - Habib Zaidi, Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award "for contributions to the development and better understanding of Monte Carlo simulation tools, improvement and quantitative analysis of attenuation and scatter correction algorithms in PET imaging, and publication of textbooks".
• 2004 - Gerd Muehllehner, Edward J. Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award "for contributions to the physics and engineering of nuclear and positron emission tomography scanners".
• 2005 - Patrick La Riviere, Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award.
